Bigstone Health Commission is seeking compassionate, reliable Shelter Support Workers to join our team and help maintain a safe and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. This role is essential to the daily operations of the shelter, offering direct support to residents while ensuring safety, dignity, and respect for all.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all shelter residents
- Conduct client intake and orientation, including coordinating sleeping arrangements
- Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution as needed
- Assist with meal distribution and perform general housekeeping / sanitation duties during shifts
- Maintain accurate daily logs, including incident reports and client documentation
- Offer referrals to mental health, addiction, social, and community support services
- Support a trauma-informed, culturally respectful, and non-judgmental shelter environment
- Other duties as requested
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or crisis situations
- Understanding of trauma-informed care practices
- Ability to work on a rotating schedule
- Effective teamwork and collaboration skills
Education and Experience:
- Grade 12 education preferred
- Experience working with vulnerable populations, such as individuals facing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges is an asset
- Experience working in shelters, residential programs, outreach, or crisis settings is an asset
- Certifications in First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Harm Reduction Training, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Naloxone training is an asset
Salary is dependent on qualifications.
